Heron Bay Cliffs — Volunteer Program

We Run on the Generosity
of People Who Show Up

No staff. No paid handlers. Heron Bay Cliffs Shepherds Rescue exists because volunteers drive the back roads of Northern New York to walk dogs, move animals, tend the land, and swing a hammer. If you have time and heart, we have a place for you.

Volunteer Opportunities

Whether you have a few hours a week or want to commit to a regular role, there is a place for you at Heron Bay Cliffs. All volunteers complete a brief orientation before their first shift.

🐕
Dog Walker & Socializer
● 2–4 hrs/week
Spend time with rescue dogs who need leash walks, outdoor exercise, basic manners practice, and calm human interaction. Socialization is critical for adoptability, and consistent walkers become trusted faces that help anxious dogs open up.
Requirements
  • 18 years or older
  • Background check required
  • Reliable transportation to the property
  • Able to handle large or reactive dogs on leash
  • Comfort working with German Shepherds and similar breeds
🦅
Wildlife Assist
● Flexible / on-call
Assist with the care of injured or orphaned wildlife in our care: feeding rounds, enclosure cleaning, transport to licensed rehabbers, and observation documentation. No prior wildlife experience required — we train you. Attention to detail and a calm demeanor are essential.
Requirements
  • 18 years or older
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to be on-call for transport needs
  • Comfort around birds of prey, waterfowl, and small mammals
🌳
Orchard & Farm Help
● Seasonal / weekend days
Planting, staking, mulching, and caring for our young fruit orchard. General farm maintenance including fencing, chicken care, garden beds, and property upkeep. Physical outdoor work — all skill levels welcome. Great for families or groups who want a hands-on farm day.
Requirements
  • 18 years or older (minors welcome with adult supervision)
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to do physical outdoor labor
  • Bring work gloves and sturdy shoes
🚐
Transport Volunteer
● As-needed
Move animals between foster homes, vet appointments, adoption events, and partner rescues. Drives can range from 15 minutes to several hours. You may transport dogs, cats, small animals, or wildlife in humane carriers. A vehicle with cargo space and a clean driving record are key.
Requirements
  • 18 years or older
  • Valid driver’s license and clean record
  • Vehicle capable of transporting a large crate
  • Background check required
  • Flexible availability for same-day requests
🏠
Foster Coordinator
● 3–6 hrs/week (remote-friendly)
Help recruit, vet, and support foster families. Coordinate placements, check in on fosters weekly, troubleshoot behavioral or medical issues, and facilitate transitions to adoption. Much of this work can be done remotely by phone and messaging. Organized, compassionate communicators thrive here.
Requirements
  • 18 years or older
  • Background check required
  • Comfortable communicating by phone and text
  • Some knowledge of dog behavior helpful but not required
  • Reliable phone and internet access
🔨
Skilled Trades
● Project-based
We are building a timberframe rescue facility from the ground up. If you have skills in carpentry, framing, electrical, plumbing, concrete work, or general construction, your expertise will directly shape the building that shelters these animals for decades. We welcome licensed tradespeople and experienced builders for weekends, work parties, or ongoing project involvement.
Requirements
  • 18 years or older
  • Reliable transportation to the property
  • Demonstrated experience in your trade
  • Licensed tradespeople strongly preferred for electrical and plumbing
  • Steel-toed boots and appropriate PPE

Why It Matters

I drove out on a Saturday expecting to just walk a dog for an hour. I ended up staying all day, helped plant twelve apple trees, and left feeling like I’d actually built something real. These people are serious about what they’re doing.

Every walk

A socialized dog is an adoptable dog. Every leash walk and calm interaction directly increases the chances a rescue dog finds its permanent home. There is no substitute for consistent, gentle human contact.

I offered to help with the electrical rough-in for one weekend. They had materials ready, a real plan, and knew exactly what they needed. It felt good to use my skills for something that will still be standing in fifty years.
